Usher Irish Road Club
Corkagh Park, Clondalkin, Ireland, January9, 2005
Yesterday's cyclo-cross event held in Corkagh Park, Clondalkin, saw the promoting
club's Shane Baker finish ahead of the race favourite, Robin Seymour, in first
place. Shane was surprised at his adaptation to the 'cross' discipline. He believed
his performance was a way of showing cyclists were aware of the catastrophe
that took place two weeks ago. Roger Lamont, who made the journey from the North,
took third place.
It took over an hour to negotiate the seven laps of a 2.5km course; this was
due to the wind and rain, which made life difficult for the participants. The
event was part of the Cycleways league, but all participants partook to swell
the coffers of the tsunami relief fund. Organiser of the proceedings, Michael
Lawless, stated: "I had a target of 300-400 euros, but it passed the 1,000 mark
thanks to the generosity of the 27 competitors and their supporters - who knows,
before the evening is out it may still grow." The monies received will be passed
over to the Irish Red Cross.
