Michelob ULTRA Gran Prix/ECV Cross #1 - C2(Crank Bros USGP #3/Verge NECCCS #2)Gloucester, USA, October 30, 20042003 Results Results Past winners West coast riders conquer Grand Prix of GloucesterA slew of west coast riders invaded the eastern shores of the Atlantic for the foirst day of the Michelob ULTRA Grand Prix of Gloucester, with Maxxis/Giant's Geoff Kabush and Kona's Ann Knapp taking the top honors in the men's and women's race. A record field of 500 riders participated in what has become the east coast's biggest race on the cyclocross calendar. It was round #2 of the Verge New England Championship Cyclo-cross Series as well as round #3 of the Crank Brothers U.S. Grand Prix of Cyclocross. An immense field of 57 women started for the elite women's race, and east coast favorite Mary McConneloug (Seven Cycles) was first off the pavement with race favorite Gina Hall (Cyclocrossworld.com), Sarah Kerlin (Velo Bella), Anna Milkowski (Rona), Marianne Stover (Independent Fabrications), McKenzie Dickey (Bike Alley), and Knapp right behind her. Quickly Knapp went to the front and drove the pace hard, managing to break away from all of her contestants except for Hall, the only one that could hold onto her wheel. Knapp used her skills in opening up a lead on Hall in the sand pits, where she rode through the sand instead of running it, gaining valuable time in the process. After the end of the 2nd lap it was all but over, as Knapp rode away from Hall and to victory. Meanwhile in the group of chasing riders Howe and Milkowski proved to be the strongest riders of the group, maintaining their front position while McConneloug's fast start proved to be too much. Milkowski powered by McConneloug at 2 to go and left Howe behind to fight with the Seven Cycles rider for 4th place. Howe eventually won that battle, leaving a tired McConneloug to 5th place. The men started with 84, another Gloucester record. The hole shot went to Johannes Huesby (FiorDiFrutta), with Ben Turner (TIAA-CREF), Mark McCormack (Clif Bar/Colavita Olive Oil) and Barry Wicks (Kona) sitting right on Huesby wheel. Not that far back was the west coast heavy hitters, including Mark Gullickson (Redline), Ben Jacques-Maynes (Sierra Nevada), Andy Jacques-Mayne (Clif Bar). Also joining the front group on lap 1 were Italian pro Danielle Pontoni (Selle Italia Elite) and Canadian national champion Peter Wedge (Kona). By lap 2, Todd Wells (Hyundai/GT) and Ryan Trebon (Kona) had joined the group after a bad start, but Pontoni started to suffer from mechanical problems that brought him to the pits twice in the lap. He eventually pulled out the race as those problems could not be solved. The first big move in the main group came from Trebon, who laid down a huge attack and left everyone to chase. Ben Jacques-Maynes answered effectively, with Wells and Andy Jacques-Maynes to take up the chase. Andy could not keep up the pace, but Adam Craig (Maxxis/Giant) bridged up and joined Ben to chase down Trebon. Meanwhile, Trebon's run ended most suddenly with a crash at 5 to go which gave the lead to Craig and put him in 4th place chasing. He was eventually able to catch the leaders, but Geoff Kabush (Maxxis/Giant) tagged along for the ride and gave the west coast squad 2 riders in the front group. The Maxxis contingent used this to their advantage, as Kabush showed he was the strongest of the day by going clear with Craig checking the other riders closely. Trebon tried in vain to get away from Craig, but it was too late as Kabush took the win and continue his very hot streak this season. Trebon came in 2nd with Craig leaving Wells behind to take 3rd. Wells was 4th and Ben Jacques-Maynes rounded out the top 5. Pre-race favorite, current Italian and former world champion, Daniele Pontoni struggled to make the front group after a poor start, and dropped out after a crash at the top of the run-up midway through the race. Other winners on the day included Rich Maile in the Masters 35+, Adam McGrath in the Juniors, Michael Henry in the B Men, Luke Keough in the Cub Juniors, Bruce McGowan in the Masters 55+, Scott Marr in the C Men, Rhonda Morin in the B Women, and Dominique Desnabts in the B Masters race. Round 3 of the Verge NECCS and Round 4 of the Crank Brothers USGP continues Sunday with day 2 of the Michelob ULTRA Grand Prix of Gloucester. Racing begins at 9am, with the elite women scheduled for 1:30pm and the elite men scheduled for 2:30pm. PhotographyImages by Mike Morris/www.intensepicts.com
