Downeast Cyclocross/Verge NECCS #1 - C2New Gloucester, Maine, USA, October 16, 20042003 Results Results Past winners McConneloug, McCormack open the year with victoriesMary McConneloug (Seven Cycles) and Mark McCormack (Clif Bar/Colavita Olive Oil) opened the 2004 Verge New England Championship Cyclocross Series with wins in the elite women's and elite men's races at the 2004 Downeast Cyclocross race in New Gloucester, Maine. Coming into the race, McConneloug was the defending series champion, and she displayed the talent that brought her to the Olympic Games this past August. Her front row starting position allowed her a great start, alongside road pro Anna Milkowski (Rona). Masters 30+ National Champion Marianne Stover (Independent Fabrications) joined the two riders at the end of the short parade lap, getting off to the great start that she is known for. However, McConneloug was just too confident and too strong, walking away with ease from the two elite riders and leading from start to finish. Milkowski and Stover were left to contend with up and coming rider Maureen Bruno (Cyclocrossworld.com), who worked her way through the field to get into the front group. Bruno showed that she was in top form on this day, eventually dropping Milkowski and Stover on lap 2 and chasing after McConneloug. Milkowski slowly faded to the 3rd group as veteran Kathryn Roszko made a charge at the end of the 2nd lap to join Stover and Sinead Fitzgibbon (CRCA/Aquafina) in a battle for 3rd position. While McConneloug cruised to the victory and Bruno kept pace to finish 2nd, the 3 riders engaged in a vintage battle until the end, when a mishap by Stover gave Fitzgibbon the margin she needed to grab the final podium spot. Rozsko finished a great ride in 4th position, while Stover had to settle for 5th. The men's race started with a group of wily veterans and young guns mixing it up at the front of the field. One of America's most experienced 'cross racers, Mark McCormack got a great start along with Johannes Huseby (FiordiFrutta), and they led the field onto the course after the parade lap. But soon the two were joined by a group containing under-23 National Champion Jesse Anthony (Cyclocrossworld.com), Tyler Johnson (Richard Sachs), Canadian National Champion Peter Wedge (Kona), and Matt Kraus (Alan Factory). With a large second group forming right behind them, 20 riders were within 10 seconds of each other as they started the second lap. That's when McCormack turned on the gas, as he put out the fastest lap of the day (7:30) to clear himself from the front group for good, and he stayed in front for the rest of the race. Anthony eventually teamed up with Wedge in front of Johnson and a hard-charging Mike Broderick (Seven Cycles), and those battles waged for most of the race. The 2nd group was also in a fight, as Huseby, Ben Turner (TIAA-CREF-Clif Bar), Matt White (NCC/BikeReg.com), and Jon Bruno (Independent Fabrications) took turns trying to get away and make contact with the front 5, but no one would give an inch for most of the race and none of them were able to move up a position. With McCormack long gone, Anthony kept answering multiple attacks from Wedge and was able to punch back and take 2nd away from the Canadian champ, the best finish in the young rider's history. Broderick eventually dropped Johnson and won the battle for 4th, with Johnson finishing 5th. Other winners on the day included Jonny Bold (Corner Cycle/Independent Fabrication) in the Masters 35+ race; Chris Long (Independent Fabrication/Gotham) in the Master's 45+ race; Will Dugan (Tosk/BCA) in the Juniors race; Pascal Bussieres (Biogen) in the Men's B race; Bruce McCowan (Providence Velo Club) in the Masters 55+; Scott Marr (Portland Velo) in the C Men's race; Jenn Magur (Verge Sport/Test Pilot) in the B Women's race; and Todd Savage (Minuteman Road Club) in the B Master's race. The Verge NECCS will next resume with a pair of races in Gloucester, Mass. The Michelob Ultra Gran Prix of Gloucester will feature a UCI Category 2 race on Saturday, Oct. 30, and a UCI Category 1 on Sunday October 31, and share those races with the Crank Brothers USGP of Cyclo-Cross.
