GP Adrie van der Poel - C1Hoogerheide, Belgium, January 4, 20042003 Results Results Past winners Angry De Clercq in formAlthough big hitter Bart Wellens was away racing in Italy, three time World Champion Mario De Clercq still demolished a good field to win the GP Adrie van der Poel in Hoogerheide. The Mr. Bookmaker-Palmans rider beat teammate Tom Vannoppen home by 20 seconds, with Arne Daelmans (Vlaanderen) third at 0'32. It was a good omen for De Clercq, with a week to go before the Belgian championships in Lille. Adri van der Poel himself provided some extra motivation for De Clercq before the start of the race, as he was quoted in a Sunday newspaper as saying "De Clercq can't do any more than hang on". An annoyed De Clercq attacked hard from the start, and only Jiri Pospisil, Arne Daelmans and Bart Aernouts could hang onto him. When the race regrouped he went again with Sven Nys. Finally, after an attack by Tom Vannoppen, De Clercq gave it everything and tore the race apart at the halfway mark. No-one could follow him, and he finished with a comfortable margin over Vannoppen and Daelmans. De Clercq crossed the line with one hand in the air and the fingers of his other hand over his mouth. "Whatever Van der Poel maintains, I'm not a wheel sucker," said De Clercq. "You don't tell that to someone who has been World Champion three times and Belgian Champion twice. If I am not mistaken, all my big wins have been with a break. That's why I wanted to ride in front here from start to finish to shred the race."
