Ulster Cyclo-Cross ChampionshipsCraigavon, Co. Armagh, February 1, 2004Travers takes Ulster cross championshipBy Shane Stokes Don Travers (Banbridge CC) emerged best at the end of a hard-fought Ulster Cyclo Cross championships at Craigavon on Sunday, tussling for most of the race with Apollo's Andy Layhe before eventually coming out best. Layhe led for the first four laps, showing good form, before Travers caught up and began what was a furious battle between them. The lead switched back and fourth, resulting in an ever-widening gap back to National Championship bronze medallist Lewis Ferguson. Layhe finally lost his chance when he punctured on the final lap, finishing 54 seconds down despite a quick wheel change. Ferguson netted another bronze after a similar ding-dong battle with XMTB's Robert Lamont. National Championship silver medallist Roger Aiken had been expected to ride but was unable to do so due to work commitments. Apollo CT took the team prize while, in the other categories, Chris McConvey came out best in the under 16 event while Christy Brown was the clear winner of the under 14 age group. Fred McSorley (veteran), Andy Burns (MTB support race) and Eamon McConvey (veteran, MTB support race) were the other winners on the day.
