Wooden Wheels/Granogue Cyclocross - C3Granogue Estate, Wilmington, Delaware, October 25, 2003Vergegear.com Mid-Atlantic Cyclocross Championship Series #3Wells and D'Aluisio win first round of Mid-Atlantic double headerBy Tammy Ebersole Last year, riders commented on how tough the Granogue course was. This year, the promoters notched it up even a bit further and the course that greeted riders this year was undoubtedly one of the toughest around. Riders were thankful for the sunny, dry conditions because rain and mud would have put the pain factor over the top. It was a rough start in the women's race, as the first lap saw several riders go down on a fast grass to road transition. As several riders slid across the road, and riders behind them hit the brakes, the Clif Bar duo of Carmen D'Aluisio and Gina Hall had already headed up the road. They would never relinquish their lead and put on an impressive display of power and smoothness, dominating the tough, technical, hilly course. D'Aluisio crossed first taking the win. Christine Vardaros (Velo Bella/Sally Spicer) rode a steady race to take third and Anna Milkowski (Gearworks/Spin Arts) took fourth place. One of the riders involved in the early crash was former national masters champion Katrina Davis (Richard Sachs). After picking herself up off the road, Davis did an outstanding job of riding back up through traffic to round out the top five. In the Elite Men's race, the surprise absence of Marc Gullickson (Redline) had spectators re-thinking their picks for the day. The start of the race saw the establishment of an early group of four that included Todd Wells (Mongoose/Hyundai), Ryan Trebon (Kona), Jackson Stewart (Clif Bar) and Andy Jacques-Mayne (Clif Bar). As Wells pushed the pace, Stewart and Jacques-Mayne started to falter. As they started to fall back, Trebon hung tough. Eventually Wells dropped the hammer, opened the gap and soloed in for the win. Trebon rode a great race to finish second and Stewart wrapped up the third spot. U23 star Jeremy Powers (NCC/Bikereg.com), continuing his streak of great rides, got past Jacques-Mayne for fourth. Jacques-Mayne finished fifth. Racing tomorrow moves to Blue Bell, Pennsylvania for Prophecy Creek Cross. PhotosImages by Jeff Feddersen/cyclocrossworld.com
