Crescent Park Cyclocross Series Race # 2November 15th, 2003After facing near-freezing temperatures at the first race of the series, Mother Nature presented milder yet wet conditions for the second race. After receiving much praise concerning the course design after the first race, the organizers decided to leave the course the same for this second race. It consisted of a 2.4 km circuit, on which the racers faced a short run-up, one flat dismount, 400m of pavement and undulating terrain. As it had rained for the two days before the race, the course was slick in some spots making it a test of bike-handling skills. Again, the first group off was the Men B. Norm Thibault returned from Nanaimo to successfully defend his victory in the first race of the series. However this time the race was much tighter as Chiron Kantakis and Nels Guloien were chasing hard behind the eventual winner. Just-crowned Canadian National Women’s Champion, Wendy Simms, decided to race with the Men B and finished a very impressive 4th place. The next group on the course was the Women. The race came down to sprint finish where Claire Cameron nipped Leah Guloien on the line. Cynthia Young suffered from mechanical problems but still managed third spot. After being defeated in the first race of the series, professional mountain biker, Andreas Hestler came back to the race with victory on his mind. He attacked hard after the first lap and no one in the field could respond. The top riders came in one by one with Washington State’s Timothy Ellis coming in for second place and Vancouver’s Basse Clement confirming his podium spot from the first race by taking a solid third.
