2nd Central Mass. Cyclo-Cross to End Homelessness - C2Worcester, USA, November 1, 20032002 Results Results Past winners Trebon, Dunlap take the wins in WorcesterWhat were clearly the two most competitive fields of elite riders in a cyclo-cross race this season came together under unseasonably warm weather Fall in New England. The course at the Central Mass. Cyclo-Cross to End Homelessness (UCI Cat. 2) was dry and very fast, and saw riders in the elite men's and women's races turning laps of about 5 minutes. Between the shorter laps and the warm weather, the rate of attrition was high in both races. Dunlap continues her winning waysIt was East meeting West, when the top riders from both coasts arrived at the start line of this significant event. At stake was a prize list of $3179, equal with the men's elite event. On the start line were the top women's racers in the country, and the call ups read like a who's who of women's cyclo-cross racing in the US. It didn't take long for the field to shake out, and for the top riders to settle into a fast, head-on race. On the first lap a group of six riders formed, including Alison Dunlap (Luna Bar), Anne Knapp (Kona), Carmen D'Aluisio and Gina Hall (Clif Bar), Mary McConneloug (Seven Cycles), and Rhonda Mazza (Vanilla Bicycles/Sellwood Cycle). Constant pressure from D'Aluisio and Hall eventually split the group, as first Mazza and then McConneloug were unable to hold the pace. Half way through the race, Anne Knapp crashed and was never able to regain the front group. Up front, Gina Hall was beginning to struggle, and with 3 laps to go the race for the win was down to Dunlap and D'Aluisio. In what may be a preview of Cyclo-Cross Nationals this December, the two were neck and neck as they passed through the start-finish line to begin the last lap. Going into the uphill barriers, Dunlap attacked hard, and D'Aluisio was unable to close the gap. She chased hard for the remainder of the lap, but the damage was done. Alison Dunlap came through to claim the win, with D'Aluisio second, and her teammate Gina Hall in third. Anne Knapp held on for fourth in front of a fast-closing McConneloug. Trebon solos to victoryThe excitement was palpable as the elite men's field took to the start line. All of the big names in US cyclo-cross were on hand, forming the most incredible start list at an American UCI race so far this season. The question floating in the air was whether former teammates Marc Gullickson (Redline) and Todd Wells (Mongoose/Hyundai) would be as dominant here this year as they were last. That question may have been answered in the wickedly fast start, when Gullickson came through the first turn in around 20th position. At the front of the race, Todd Wells was pushing the pace, with Ryan Trebon and the rest of the favourites right on his wheel. On the second lap, Wells and Trebon broke away from the lead group, never to be seen again. Behind them, Gullickson eventually rejoined the lead group, that now contained about 15 riders. Immediately after making contact, Gullickson attacked, and in his wake the lead group was whittled down to ten riders, Jeremy Powers (NCC/BikeReg.com), Jackson Stewart (Clif Bar), Mark McCormack (Saturn), Travis Brown (Trek/VW), Alan Obye (Devo/Balance Bar), Adam Craig (Giant), and Barry Wicks, Bart Bowen, Dale Knapp, and Erik Tonkin, all riding for Kona. A crash took Obye out of the picture, while Craig suffered a mechanical problem, causing him to lose contact permanently. While Jeremy Powers drove the group, the Kona riders took turns attacking, forcing Powers and Stewart to do all the work in bringing them back. Midway through the race, a rolled tire forced Travis Brown to have to chase to get back on, but he continued to keep the pace high, which eventually led to a massive attack by Bowen, who bridged up to Gullickson in short order. Up front, Wells slid out on a greasy corner, giving Trebon the perfect opportunity to attack. With a surging acceleration he left Wells behind, and soloed the remaining 3 laps to the victory. Wells came in alone for 2nd, 40 seconds behind, while Bowen attacked Gullickson to take 3rd place, 2 minutes back. Behind Bowen, McCormack won the sprint for 4th from Travis Brown, while Jackson Stewart led home Powers and Wicks, for 6th, 7th, and 8th respectively. Gullickson, after having ridden the majority of the race alone between the leaders and the chasing group, faded to 9th. Rad Racing's Tucker Thomas won the junior race, beating Jamey Driscoll (GMBC/Invensys) by 19 seconds. Driscoll had been right there with the leaders until his chain jammed midway through the race, causing him to fall behind by nearly a minute. Charles Marzot (Corner Cycle) finished in 3rd, followed by Richard Sachs rider Konrad Lebas. Other winners on the day included Rich Malbe in the Masters 35+ race, Paul Curley in the 45+ race, and Cory Burns in the B Men's race. The same fields will line up for the Clif Bar/ECV Cyclo-Cross race tomorrow in Gloucester, MA. This will be the 2nd round in the Verge New England Championship Cyclo-Cross Series.
