Cyclo-Cross World Cup #5 - CDMHoogerheide, Netherlands, February 16, 20032002 Results Results Past winners Nijs wins World Cup final, Wellens takes jerseyBelgian pair Bart Wellens and Sven Nijs shared the honours in the final round of the World Cup, held in the Dutch town of Hoogerheide, home of Adri van der Poel. Wellens finished second in the race and thus secured his second rainbow coloured jersey of the season, finishing 5 points in front of Sven Nijs in the standings. Nijs had to be content with winning the last round, in doing so moving himself up the standings ahead of De Clercq and Groenendaal. "I had to ride a controlled race, and that worked for me," said Wellens to Belgian TV. "It was hard sometimes, but I did not let that get to me. At last, I win my first classification." "In the last lap I tried then Nijs attacked. Then I slipped on a corner," added Wellens, who will celebrate his excellent season after next weekend. Nijs commented that "I am enormously satisfied with my season. I lost the World Cup due to a broken stem in Wetzikon, but I can live with that. I am still very happy with the form that I have after the World Championships. I am stronger and more mature than in other years. Now I will go to Spain for the preparation of my road season." With double points on offer in today's fifth and final round of the World Cup, anything could happen with respect to the overall standings. A bad day from Wellens could see him lose the jersey, despite being the clear leader coming into the race. But the World Champ was up to the task, seemingly showing no signs of tiredness after racing and beating Nijs yesterday in Eeklo. The parcours was fast, and the speed was set by the Belgians. Wellens, Nijs, Mario De Clercq, Erwin Vervecken, Ben Berden, Richard Groenendaal (Ned) and Petr Dlask (Cze) quickly formed a leading group. U23 star Thijs Verhagen joined the party, and tried to attack this formidable group. After seven laps, it was the turn of Nijs and Wellens to break clear from the group, and the pair rode together over the final laps. With Wellens unable to lose the jersey now, he could afford to let Nijs win the sprint, which he did so with ease. Berden came through in third position, with the Belgian hegemony only broken by Dlask in fourth. PhotosImages by Luc Claessens/actiefotos.be
