Heritage Series Wraps up at the Mike Wiley Memorial

The Mike Wiley Memorial was the final stop on the 2003 Heritage Cyclocross Series and produced many deserved winners. On hand were race sponsor George Sykes (Corner Cycle), as well as Series Sponsor Dan Plitman of Bici Imports who awarded the series winners their champions jersey. While the Junior and Cub Junior overall champions were decided prior to the final event, the remaining categories were still up for grabs, and featured some hard fought racing.

Held at Trotting Park fields in Falmouth, MA, the course drew positive comments from most riders and featured some tricky off-camber sections, plenty of fast grassy and paved sections, two running sections and some interesting BMX style track racing. Like the rest of New England, winter had arrived on Cape Cod and the riders were greeted by dry, but cold conditions, with temperatures hovering in the low 30's.

Racing kicked off with the beginner men and turned into a one man show, as William Palm dominated the beginners race, distancing himself from series co-leader Gary Cundiff early in the race. In the end, the series finished with Palm the champion, Cundiff second and Chuck Nguyen in third.

Next up, the Cub Juniors clashed with the women. While Kitty Farago wrapped up the Open women's category with ease, the beginner women fought out the series to the end, with series mainstay Janet Sestokas narrowly edging Heather Owens for the series and Jennifer Rhodes in third. Unlike the Beginner women, the Cub Juniors were decided before racing started, with local Nick Keough finishing ahead of his much younger brother, Luke and Nathan Belcher finishing in third.

The Masters and Junior events got an extra treat, when New England race fan Frank Jennings added to the 40+ and Junior prize pot just prior to the start. However, the added prize money failed to produce a challenge to Jonny Bold's (Corner Cycle) show of domination. With his victory in the final race, Bold took the series from 40+ winner Paul Curley and Tim Groesbeck. Meanwhile, Mike Wickman turned on the jet's to cruise to an easy junior win. This did nothing to affect the series, however, with Toby Marzot (Corner Cycle) taking the series despite racing at National Championships.

The final race of the day featured a combined Elite and B race. In the Elite's, Noah Taylor schooled the field, but Cape resident Jeff Craddock took the series, with series promoter Chris Harnish in second and Saturn Pro Mark McCormack in third. The B race was a much more hard fought affair with Brant Hornberger taking the win on the day, but Ryan Rumsey taking the series over Tom Hopper and Jude Demeis.
