Rumble on the River #1

French Broad River Park, Asheville April 27, 2004

The return of the rumble

By Asheville Velodrome Group

Racing has returned to the French Broad River Park for another season with a new race promoter and a new bridge over the track for infield access that is the coolest thing this side of anywhere. Many thanks are due the Asheville Parks and Recreation Department for the continued development of the City's flagship park. Clark Hollins has taken over the race promotion as the new owner of Hearn's Cycling and Fitness, the perennial title sponsor of this race series.

Many familiar faces populated the race fields, and the evening's big surprise arose from the lower division of the road bike points races. In the B grade 30 lapper, last year's champ, Wes Dickson, looked ready to continue his dominance, flanked by a few able lieutenants. However, young Jeff Frazer (now 16) has been seen all winter developing his 200-meter speed, and with a year's passage has strapped on some power to boot. Frazer and Dickson traded sprint laps throughout and finished tied on points, with the nod going to the youngster on late scores.

The A division was determined by a powerful breakaway that provided the top three places, led home by new Cane Creek sheriff, Darby Harris. Bob Wright and Kent Williams consumed the remaining spoils. While these three has their way with the field, it was noted that Joey Coddington, the only man to ever win this series, was noodling around in the field resting up for a Thursday night race out of town. So, the three-time winner has staked his rivals to an early lead. The entire summer lies ahead.

The fixed gear division has added yet again many new riders over the winter, and track racing is alive and well in Asheville after a few short years. Two-time defending champion, Brian 'The Arrow' Pierce, was not on hand on Tuesday so his alter ego Blair 'Frodo' Hobgood laid waste to the field by sweeping the events. Since it is Kentucky Derby week it could be observed that Marc 'The Axe' Mullinax played Alydar to Hobgood's Affirmed, and finished second over and over and over again. Behind these two were perennial favorite Mike 'Special K' Koerschner taking third and Kevin 'Blue Light-why do you have to put me in the A group' Bray taking fourth. And that is why.

The lower division of the fixed gear riders has swelled with first-timers. Most notable is Andrew Erskine. And it will be remembered that although this was his first night of mass start racing, he already owns the track record for the Kilometer. This is no surprise for a man who is a retired Welsh rugby man. Consequently, Andrew 'No Nickname Yet' Erskine was first on the night and will be promoted the A Grade in two weeks. Previous promoter Chris 'The Captain' Kamm is racing again and managed the second spot in a tiebreak with Herb 'The Taxman' Young.

It was a great night and everyone had fun. And the bridge is a beautiful thing.

We thank our sponsors: Asheville Parks and Recreation, Hearn's Cycling and Fitness, Asheville Bicycle Racing Club, Liberty Bicycles, Cane Creek Cycling Components, Dr, Jim McMillan and Asheville Family Health Center, Dr. Steve Miller, DDS, Pro Bikes of Asheville.
