Greipel grabs another

Having dominated the sprints at the International Bayern Rundfahrt last week, André Greipel (Columbia-Highroad) continued his winning streak with victory in the Rund um die Braunkohle in eastern Germany.

"It was great teamwork that put André in the position to pull off such a good win," said directeur sportif Jan Schaffrath. "He got in a break in the first 100 kilometres which allowed Columbia-Highroad to save a lot of energy for the finale. Then he eased back and hid in the bunch, and we took control of the race to set things up for André.

"Greipel wasn't at 100 percent after being in the break, but at least that way he could rest a little and have time to recover. The race goes through such flat terrain, it almost always ends in a bunch sprint and we really powered things up in the last five kilometres," explained Schaffrath.

The big German's rivals were caught by surprise when Columbia-Highroad teammate Tony Martin launched an attack in the closing phase of the race. "They didn’t know whether to chase down Tony and make it easier for André, or whether to let Tony go," said Schaffrath. "The strategy worked out really well. When Tony was caught, [teammate] Marcus Burghardt was waiting to lead out André, and he could go for the win."
