Illawarra, NSW, August 13, 2005

Agony and the ecstasy

If time trials are called the 'race of truth' then hill climb time trials should be called the 'race of the insane'. Thirty riders enjoyed excellent conditions for the Illawarra Cycle Club Hill Climb Championship. Thomas Griffith not only won the U17 division in a time of 9:03:72 but in doing so he improved on his time from last year by 1min 19seconds.

The fastest U19 rider was Tom Kojec in 9:09:28.

Last year Megan Wilkie was second in the Women's division by 6seconds to Kerry Augustson. When Wilkie improved on last year's time by 30seconds she probably thought she had done enough to win, but Augustson improved on her previous best time by 27seconds to stop the clock at 9:43:93 and win by 2.3seconds!

James Greathead's time of 8:44:69 was good enough to win the Men's division by 2seconds from Aaron Hull. Tony Sampson showed that his training has paid dividends and improved on his time of last year by 1min 38seconds to take out third place.

Fastest time of the day went to Craig Paull. His time of 8:04:96 won him Masters 2. Bobby Krstevski was second and Joe Chiaverini third.

The Club sponsor, Frank Soto, showed his competition a clean pair of wheels winning the Masters 3 in a time of 8:51:69. Lou Caruana and Dave Russel filled the minor placings. Gary Mandy showed that he can not only sprint and race track but also hill climb. His time of 9:04:06 won Masters 4. Adrian White edged Michael Comensoli out of second place by 1.6seconds.

Tony Stephenson rode a good race and won Masters 5 with Joe Pereira second. Lionel Covington won Masters 7 from Vince O'Dwyer.

Without a doubt the most impressive ride of the day was done by Eric Doughty in Masters 12. He celebrated his 85 birthday a fortnight ago. His time of 13:14:33 was only 8seconds slower than he rode in 2003 and something that many riders half his age would be proud of.

Next week's race is the 44.5km President's handicap, 2 laps to Calderwood road. Prize money will be in excess of $250. Please contact Lionel or Peter if you have not already entered.
